THE senior author first visited southwestern Tamaulipas in the spring of 1938 when, as a member of that year's John B. Semple Expedition, he participated in a cursory survey of the bird life of the Rancho Rinconada, a partly cultivated stretch of flood-plain on the east bank of the Rio Sabinas, not far from the hill village of Gomez Farias (see Sutton and Burleigh, 1959).
