The present research investigates public policy concerning teacher education in Brazil. It is a critical rereading of historical documents focusing on laws, legal documents, projects, institutional and public policies and teaching careers developed by the Brazilian state, as well as social and scientific organisations. Emphasis is given to current political, social and economic change and educational reform implemented since 1990 as well as to the effects of international decisions on the implementation of policies in Brazilian public education.
