A review of mechanisms of angiogenesis, and the key molecules involved in is given. It encompasses the history of this nearly five decades-old field of investigation, and offers an insight into the use of angioinhibitory therapy in oncology and ophthalmology. A special reference to this process in the cornea includes reviewing the literature which deals with corneal avascularity, neovascularization, and the therapies aimed at the inhibition of corneal new blood vessels. Key words: angiogenesis, neovascularization, cornea
