Nuklearna elektrana Cernobilj nalazila se na reci Pripjat, 18 km severozapadno od grada Cernobilja, 10 km od granice sa Belorusijom i 10 km severno od Kijeva (tri miliona stanovnika). Cinila su je cetiri reaktora tipa RBMK – 1000 (1 GW elektricne, odnosno 3,2 GW termicke snage). Reaktor je hlađen lakom vodom, grafit je koriscen kao moderator, a prirodni uranijum kao gorivo. Mana ovog tipa reaktora, koji jos uvek rade u nekim zemaljama bivse Istocne Evrope, pre svega je u nedostatku zastitne strukture i velikoj kolicini zapaljivog grafita u jezgru. Elektrana je definitvno zatvorena decembra 2000. godine.
