The possibilities of assessment and classification of capabilities of upper extremity of children with cerebral palsy

Numerous classification of cerebral palsy have been proposed in literature but none of these classifications suffice to present full information about severity or deficit level of gross and fine motor uper limbs abilities. The abilities of the upper extremities are of great importance in activities of daily life and determine the degree of independence in the same. The aim of the study was to determine manual dexterity (capacity) and ability (performance ) in these children. The study sample consisted of 30 children aged 7-15 (AS 12,1 ; SD 2,6) both genders. In order to study the manual dexterity Nine hole peg test and Box and Block test were used, and manual skills were assessed using the Manual Ability Classification System, as well as by Abilhand-Kids questionnaire which was filled in by parents. In order to assess motor functioning Gross Motor Function Scale was applied. The received results show statistically significant correlation at the level p<0.001 between the demonstrated level of gross motor skills and development of manual skills. A statistically significant correlation was obtained also between the gross motor skills and manual skills in relation to the type of cerebral palsy (p<0.001). In tests of manual dexterity children who are at the level 1 have better results than children at higher levels. Performance on the tests of manual dexterity is caused by the functional capabilities which undertakes the selection of tests and classification which is used to assess the ability of children with cerebral palsy.
