Experience report carried out with the objective ofcharacterizing a prison environment located in the western border of Rio Grande do Sul. The results are presented in two analytical categories, the first one covers preconceived and biased perspectives of the researchers and their demystification. The other is the finding of the absence of a formal work process in the health area in the prison environment. The academic insertion allowed to confirm the deficits related to the infrastructure, the overcrowding and the health care. At the same time, it revealed the resistance of health professionals to guarantee the human rights of this vulnerable population. The urgency of including this environment / population in the process of training health professionals is identified by the public security agents and ratified by the nursing academics who opportunely carried out this study.
