This communication is to analyze the public policies of assistance for mothers and children through the prevention of diseases child care the government of Getulio Vargas, between 1930 and 1945. Accordingly, emphasis will be given to the two public institutions: the Office of Child Care at the University of Brazil and the National Department of Child. The first by training specialists in the field of childcare and the second by the expansion of childcare throughout the countryside. The expansion of childcare within the company's aim was to combat the high rate of infant mortality through prevention of diseases highly harmful to the health of children and pregnant women. However, despite intensive administrative centralization in the period presented, the public policies of assistance for mothers and children had to reconcile with local interests.
