The purpose of this communication is to discuss the relationship between the teaching of local history and the memories of the Afrodescendant population. The greatest discomfort in relation to the teaching of local history is the place occupied by the black population, in the “official” history of Itapagipe. References to the participation of black populations in the city’s constitution are related to the past of slaves and former slaves. Is it possible for the teaching of history to bring protagonism to other characters and social groups, until then silenced in local history? The reading of the book “Nossa História”, written by Jurani Gonçalves Lima, wife of a farmer from the region, asks us about the historical subjects portrayed in the formation of the official history of the city. The book is considered an official source of the History of Itapagipe, used in municipal and state schools
