The Pliocene was characterized by a weak equatorial sea surface temperature gradient in the Pacific, confusingly reminiscent of that seen fleetingly during an El Ni no. Data also show interannual variability in the Pliocene, raising questions about ENSO’s dependence on the mean climate state.
