The " F i f t h Network Cinquieme Reseau" conference, otherwise known as the Video Conference o f Independent Producers he ld i n Toronto i n September t h i s year (see S a l t e r ' s a r t i c l e i n t h i s i ssue) was a t once i n t e r e s t i n g , n o s t a l g i c and anachron i s t i c as a harb inger o f a new wor ld t h a t has n o t a r r i v e d . I t inc luded people who were ser ious students o f experimental , a1 t e r n a t i ve and comun i ty media -government and ex-government, p ro fess iona l , amateur and d i l e t t a n t e , and people who are u s u a l l y s t y l e d video f reaks. The l a t t e r was ev ident when p a r t of the audience began b a t t i n g co lo red ba l loons back and f o r t h , no doubt f o r camera e f f e c t s , w h i l e speakers were t a l k i n g .
