Osobliwe właściwości i zjawiska wykazywane przez te materiały sprawiły, że w ostatnich dwóch dekadach jesteśmy świadkami rewolucji materiałowej. Świadczy o tym zarówno i istotny wzrost intensywności prowadzonych prac badawczych jak i rosnący zakres możliwości praktycznego stosowania osiągnięć nanotechnologii we wszystkich dziedzinach naszego życia.
