Education is a subject that always will be discussed. This is a consequence of the differences in insight into the general and specific objectives and into the strategy that should be followed in order to achieve the target. The nature of education is depending on the subject and its actual situation, the acquired knowledge and the overall social characteristics. Forestry is a specific subject. Its importance differs from region to region. It has multiple functions, so that the various interest groups strive for different objectives. It is therefore not surprizing that forestry education is organized in very different ways. Each type of education should be adjusted continuously to the ever changing specific aims and possibilities. It should be partially adapted to local circumstances, so that a general uniform training system should not be aimed at. 1. CHARACTERISTICS OF FORESTRY EDUCATION
