The chief aims during the contract period were to design, construct and implement a new flowing afterglow-guided ion beam instrument for use in determining thermochemical properties of organometallic species pertinent to homogeneous catalysis, and to develop an electrospray ionization (ESI) source for the flowing afterglow-triple quadrupole apparatus for use in real-time analysis of reactive intermediates in catalytically active solutions. Both goals were achieved. In parallel with development of the guided ion beam and electrospray ionization experiments, the author used existing equipment to work on some of the problems outlined in the previous proposal, and to open up new research areas.
