In September 1986, the Fuels Branch of the Aero Propulsion Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, began an investigation of the potential of the production of jet fuel from the liquid by-products streams produced by the gasification of lignite at the Great Plains Gasification Plant in Beulah, North Dakota. Funding was provided to the Department of Energy (DOE), Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC), to administer the experimental portion of this effort. This report details the program with the University of North Dakota Energy and Mineral Research Center (UNDEMRC) to study the removal of heteroatoms and the saturation of aromatics found in the Great Plains tar oil stream. UNDEMRC tested a processing approach consisting of multiple-stage hydrogenations.
