Recent progress in gauge field theories has led to a new perspective on the structure of matter and basic interactions at short distances. It is clear that at very high energies, quantum electrodynamics, together with the weak and strong interactions, are part of a unified theory with new fundamental constants, new symmetries, and new conservation laws. A nontechnical introduction to these topics is given, with emphasis on fundamental tests and measurements. 21 references, 14 figures.
