In this paper we aim to develop a critical reflection on the trajectory of the New Education in Portugal, considering its roots and metamorphosis, which are plural in both cases. We try to relativize the underlying dichotomous rhetoric of the New Education discourses and systematize and analyse the major ideas included in its project. Finally, we intend to reflect on the New Education’s legacy, considering the set of ideas and beliefs that have become part of what we can call a “progressive educational tradition”.
