In this article, I analyze the Angolan author Luandino Vieira’s prison writings, collected in the 2015 volume Papeis da Prisao - apontamentos, diario, correspondencia (1692-1971) . As part of this analysis, I discuss the role of colonial prisons under the Portuguese Estado Novo in the affirmation of Angolan national identity.
