This paper analyzes the causes of Spanish emigration in the current century, paying special attention to the most recent one. The methodology used is fundamentally based on making connections between data from primary and secondary sources. It concludes that the factors related to "external mobility" were the main catalysts of this process until 2008-2010. Since these years, especially since 2011, the factors of expulsion associated with the economic crisis and the worsening of its effects are clearly the main elements responsible for the remarkable increase in the rate of Spanish emigration.
