The article examines efforts to encourage a large-scale birth cohort study in China. Particular focus is given to how this type of study might be used to examine environmental pollution and its relation to infertility, miscarriage, birth defects and obesity. Additional topics discussed include the maternal and child health (MCH) care system in China, how it is hoped that the study would start before conception and hospital-based recruitment for such a study.
