Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic complex disease that requires medical care, self management education and ongoing support to prevent complications. Health education is one of steps to increase knowledge and skills of diabetes management independently to avoid the complication of DM, one of them is Diabetes Self Management Education and Support (DSME/S). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of DSME/S on increasing the knowledge of patients with type 2 DM. This study use pre experimental method with one group pretest-posttest design. There were 30 patients with type 2 DM at Idaman Kota Banjarbaru Hospital from March to April 2018. This study used consecutive sampling technique. Follow up was conducted after intervention on the third day. The instruments were module, demographic questionnaire and DM knowledge questionnaire. Based on Paired t test results, there is an effect of DSME/S on increasing the knowledge of patients with type 2 DM was 0.0001 (p<α; α=0.005), with an increase of 15.97%. DSME/S is effective on improving knowledge of patient with type 2 DM, so it can be given to patients with type 2 DM as self-management education to prevent complications. Keywords : DSME/S, type 2 DM, knowledge, health education ABSTRAK Diabetes melitus (DM) merupakan penyakit kronis kompleks yang membutuhkan perawatan medis, pendidikan manajemen mandiri serta dukungan yang berkelanjutan untuk mencegah terjadinya komplikasi. Pendidikan kesehatan merupakan salah satu langkah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan manajemen diabetes secara mandiri sehingga terhindar dari komplikasi DM, salah satu pendidikan kesehatan tersebut adalah dengan Diabetes Self Management Education and Support (DSME/S). Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh DSME/S terhadap peningkatan pengetahuan pasien DM tipe 2. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode pre experimental with one group pretest-postest design Sampel penelitian ini sebanyak 30 pasien DM tipe 2 di RSD Idaman Kota Banjarbaru pada Maret sampai April 2018. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik consecutive sampling. Pelaksanaan follow up dilakukan pada hari ketiga setelah intervensi dilakukan. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah modul, kuesioner demografi dan kuesioner pengetahuan mengenai DM. Berdasarkan hasil uji Paired t test, terdapat pengaruh DSME/S terhadap peningkatan pengetahuan pasien DM tipe 2 yaitu 0.0001 (p<α; α=0,005), dengan peningkatan sebesar 15,97%. DSME/S efektif dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan pasien DM tipe 2, sehingga dapat diberikan kepada pasien DM tipe 2 sebagai pendidikan manajemen diri untuk mencegah komplikasi.
