Antonio Sergio writes the Essays to present the problem of the culture in Portugal, he wants to awake the intellectual elite to the chore of the cultural revolution. Such revolution wishes the authentic culture as criticism, because like that he understands it to have been at “Quinhentismo” or in the age of the Discoveries. It happens that the Portuguese “Quinhentismo” was a promise that was not carried out. The Essays aim at the culture as criticism, similar to what generations of Portuguese did when they denounced the stop of Portugal for awareness of unfulfilled promise.
