This paper describes the Embrapa initiative in implementing its open access strategies regarding scientific information. It briefly presents the environment in which the initiative was developed and the characteristics of the project, of its implementation and the results attained. It also presents peculiarities of information processing, such as its population, copyright management and work teams involved. It concludes by reflecting on the need for harmonization between the open access potential and institutional realities.
