Effect of NaCl Salt on the Permeability of Base Clay Liners in Solid Waste Disposal Landfills Because of its low permeability, liners constructed from high plasticity clays are the main material used in solid waste disposal landfills. It is exposed there to various chemical, biological and physical events, and these clay liners are affected by the resulting leachate. For this reason, when attempting to define the geotechnical characteristics of clays, the use of distilled water or tap water is far from being representative of the in-situ conditions. In this study, laboratory permeability tests were conducted on two different CL-classes and one CH-class clay using NaCl solutions representing leachate. Evaluation of the experimental results indicated that the permeability of CH-class clay increased with increasing NaCl concentrations; however, NaCl concentrations had no discernible effect on the permeability of CL-class clays.
