1 Interpolated from ETP 2016. Thermal Coal power plants under construction continue to rise in China at alarming levels. The amount of plants under construction in China (205GW) and India (65GW) are the numbers to watch. In the case of China, our analysis shows less than half of the capacity presently under construction would be sufficient to break the IEA annual thermal coal carbon budget by 2020 and the total budget by 2036. Stranded assets are likely to emerge as load factors continue to fall.
