The United States Military Academy (USMA) has a robust military ethical education and training program that spans the entire four year West Point experience. However, Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FEE) data from students who graduated from the USMA environmental engineering program between 2002 and 2007 revealed performance at or below the national average on the ethics portion of the exam. The goals of this study were to compare and contrast the underpinnings of military ethics with engineering ethics; assess if military ethical education and training received at USMA properly prepares environmental engineering graduates for decision making processes in engineering ethics; and, consider alternative methods for assessing and evaluating ethical competence at the undergraduate level. Assessment results are presented, which attempt to evaluate development of ethical competence in the USMA environmental engineering program.
