This paper considers a novel application of the Lego NXT platform and the RWTH-Mindstorms Toolbox for Matlab to create a series of classroom activities that expose and engage middle school students in all aspects of controlling a differential-drive mobile robot. Three in-class lessons, demonstrations, and activities illustrate applications of mathematical concepts, primarily geometry and trigonometry, to solve practical problems in mobile robotics. Classroom assessment activities reveal a statistically significant increase in students’ knowledge through the robotics-based lessons.
