In this article we analyze the parallels between the reception of the medieval ius commune by territorial systems of the western countries of Europe and the European Community law by Member States of the present European Union. Insisting on the historical parallels, we believe that the received legal traditions produce a common vulgar law that explains the differences between the national laws. On the other hand it is stressed that we do not receive legal texts but principles, legal techniques and, mainly, legal culture.
