Co-morbidities have been recognised as playing a crucial role in the progress of the older patient with HF in particular. The 2016 ESC/HFA HF guidelines stress the signicance of co-morbidities more than any previous guidelines have. Iron deciency is a co-morbidity, that has received very little attention until the last decade, as evidence has accumulated both for the signicance of this co-morbidity and the emergence of safe effective therapies that appear to offer signicant benets to the HF population who suffer this co-morbidity.
