The article concerns the problem of 'essential contestedness' of power as a political concept. The author explains the idea of essential contestability of political concepts and its basic arguments presented by S.Lukes and W.Connolly. Several contradictions and inconsistencies in their views arc revealed and criticised. The author concludes that different conceptions of power can be evaluated on rational grounds, and the advantages of one conception over the others can be stated.
