The article discusses the nature of our relation to the “other” countries. The dichotomy "they” — “we" dates back to the most ancient ethnic stereotypes. In the course of civilization changes took the trend towards the direction of universal humane values. The role of mass media, particularly television has specific impact on individual consciousness. The scope of international relations is far from ordinary human experience. Media, shaping its agenda, can create too one’s value world view. Television, as the most recent research shows, is the most used source of information. And as far as it creates the monochrome, «black and white» picture of the world, it leads to significant changes in public opinion’s poll. This is testified by Levada Center opinion polls pursued as far as concerned relations to the United States and Ukraine, which have dramatically changed against the background of information support on the part of Russian television under recent events. Public opinion can turn from the object in influence into a fully fledged subject with its “right to vote” only in case of discourse with discussing of all points of view on what's happening. Information channels should represent different forms of ownership; their information policy should be based on an objective reflection of reality; with an alternative discussion of problems; with the assistance of experts. Nowadays blogosphere and certain TV/radio channels serve as alternative sources. But the behavior of the audience sticks to the rule, which presupposes, that the more homogenous the estimated field of the Imaginable, the larger audience it gathers. Those looking for various and alternative points of view recourse to a broader spectrum of sources. Modernization course implies, that society, should to share common humane values, tending to integration into the general socio-cultural space. That’s why mass media should objectively reproduced international practice, with the assistance of expert opinion, accentuating the fact that not the country implements actions being discussed by the world community, but certain structures and specific individuals.. KEy WORDS: “other” countries, attitudes, the role of the mass media, television, value cut, audience consumption information
