The Teaching of Luka Zhidyata is the most ancient Russian teaching. The ideological content of Luka Zhidyata's Teaching analyzes in the article. Points of the moral program and its sources are considered. Proofs are provided that the archbishop addressed the sermon not to all the people of Novgorod, but only to city elite. The moral precepts have political implication. The conclusion that Luka Zhidyata acted in interests of the Kiev prince Yaroslav. The text of Luka Zhidyat's Teaching is published in the appendix.
