The paper deals with some elements characteristic of carbonaceous schists. The mutual relationship of these elements and their distribution in schist fractions were studied in order to shed light on the depositional conditions of the Precambrian black schists in the Outokumpu region, East Finland. Special attention is paid to the variation in the carbon to sulphur weight per cent ratio and to the concentration of B and V 2 0 5 . The results are compared with those obtained from contemporaneous and younger through to recent carbonaceous formations, about the origin of which more information is available.
