BİR ERKEN CUMHURİYET DÖNEMİ ENDÜSTRİ MİRASI: ANTALYA ELEKTRİK FABRİKASI

Although industrialization began in Turkey in the Late Ottoman period, it has gained momentum in the Early Republican Era. As Turkey was a young republic recently emerged from the war, its financial sources were limited in the Early Republican Period. Although national industrialization policy had been focusing on reconstruction and development of the big cities such as Ankara, Istanbul, Bursa, Adana and Izmir under financial limitations, there were even thirty small scale industrial workshops built in Antalya in this early period. Unfortunately, among these thirty industries, only Antalya Power Plant, Antalya Warm Climate Systems Duplication and Reclamation Station, Tekirova Mineral Processing Plant, Antalya’s Gaswork and a mill have been partly preserved and reached to the present day. Antalya Power Plant was a private enterprise located at the center of Antalya. The plant provided electricity and made the local people who use oil lamps and gas lamps; had met with artificial electricity lighting for the first time. Hence, liberation from darkness has become a turning point in everyday life of the people live in Antalya. The arrival of electricity and the electrification of some streets and houses have led the enlightenment of the local people of Antalya both literally and metaphorically. In this study, it is aimed to examine the industrial heritage of Antalya through the case of Antalya Power Plant which is a structure remaining from the Early Republican Period. Hence, it is intended to raise awareness about the protection of the industrial heritage, and convey the importance of cultural heritage.
