Armonía y diafonía en la traducción al inglés de El arpa y la sombra

espanolEste trabajo analiza la ultima novela de Alejo Carpentier, El arpa y la sombra (1979) y su traduccion al ingles por Thomas y Carol Christensen (The Harp and the Shadow, 1990). Se pone de relieve que esta novela esta atravesada por la traduccion de diferentes maneras. Por un lado, Carpentier, al referirse a la historia de Cristobal Colon, alude a las dificultades de los conquistadores que intentaron narrar el nuevo mundo, una operacion de traduccion de caracter primigenio. Por otro lado, el autor intenta desmitificar la figura de Colon y para ello recurre a intertextos, como los diarios de Colon y la Biblia, ‘traduciendolos’ y haciendo un uso ironico de los mismos para poner al descubierto los mecanismos por los cuales un texto puede ser manipulado para un cierto fin. Al mismo tiempo, se hace referencia al esquema musical de sinfonia que Carpentier quiso darle a la novela. La musicalidad no solo se percibe a nivel de la estructura sino tambien del ritmo de la prosa. El aspecto sonoro es algo ineludible a tener en cuenta en la traduccion de esta novela y el analisis del mismo sera el eje central de este trabajo. On y met en relief que ce roman est sillonne par la traduction de differentes facons. D’un cote, en abordant l’histoire de Christophe Colomb, Carpentier fait allusion aux difficultes des conquerants qui tenterent le recit du nouveau monde, operation de traduction a caractere primitif. D’un autre cote, l’auteur essaie de demystifier la personnalite de Colomb et il fait donc appel a des intertextes comme les journaux de Colomb et la Bible, « les traduisant » et faisant d’eux un usage ironique pour devoiler les mecanismes qui permettent qu’un texte puisse etre manipule avec un but determine. En meme temps, on y fait reference au schema musical de symphonie que Carpentier a voulu donner au roman. Et la musicalite en est percue non seulement au niveau de la structure mais aussi du rythme de la prose. L’aspect sonore est a considerer ineluctablement lors de la traduction de ce roman et son analyse sera l’axe central de ce travail. L’enjeu consiste alors a revoir les moments musicaux encadrant ce roman, afin de les confronter avec ce qui est produit dans la traduction en anglais. EnglishThis paper is a comparative analysis of Alejo Carpentier's last novel, El arpa y la sombra (1979), and its English translation, The Harp and the Shadow (1990), by Thomas and Carol Christensen.The issue of translation is relevant to this novel in several ways. On one hand, Carpentier, choosing Christopher Columbus as the main character, alludes to the difficulties met by the conquistadors when they tried to put the new world into words, a novel and challenging translation procedure. On the other hand, the author tries to demythologize Columbus through the use of intertexts like his diaries and the Bible, “translating” and using them in an ironic way to reveal the mechanisms through which a text can be manipulated. At the same time, the underlying musical structure (a symphony) on which Carpentier modeled his novel is also analyzed. Musicality is perceived not only at the structural level, but also in the rhythm of the prose. The aspect of sound quality should be taken into account in the translation of this novel; its analysis is the core of this paper. The aim is to review the “musical moments” that provide a framework to this novel so as to compare and contrast them with the English translation.
