The Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) suite ofprotocols has been defined to control different switching technologiesas well as different applications. These include support forrequesting Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) connections includingSynchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy(SDH) and Optical Transport Networks (OTNs). This documentconcentrates on the routing requirements placed on the GMPLS suite ofprotocols in order to support the capabilities and functionalities ofan Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) as defined by theITU-T. This memo provides information for the Internet community.
