The Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) suite ofprotocols has been defined to control different switching technologiesand different applications. These include support for requesting TimeDivision Multiplexing (TDM) connections, including Synchronous OpticalNetwork (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and OpticalTransport Networks (OTNs). This document concentrates on thesignaling aspects of the GMPLS suite of protocols. It identifies thefeatures to be covered by the GMPLS signaling protocol to support thecapabilities of an Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON). Thisdocument provides a problem statement and additional requirements forthe GMPLS signaling protocol to support the ASON functionality. Thismemo provides information for the Internet community.
