This paper presents the R+D Spanish plan funded Improving coexistence and learning in primary and secondary schools with immigrant students. The project is being developed by a research team from seven Spanish universities, and has developed fieldwork in five autonomous regions with the aim of identifying educational practices that are being developed in primary and secondary schools with migrant students, and which are improving both their academic results and coexistence. One of the main results of the research is the identification of the participation of immigrant family members as a successful action in the schools with high numbers of migrant students. This participation includes both their participation as volunteers within the classrooms or in other school spaces, and their participation in activities for their own education. These forms of participation benefit the students, on the one hand by introducing role models within the school and promoting education being more valued and, on the other hand, promoting their autonomy and responsibility as regards their own learning, both at home and in the classrooms.
