Water is the main natural element of planet Earth, it is a limited renewable natural resource and it is what allows the development of plant, animal and human life. Water pollution is important, since it will directly affect the health of man, the flora and fauna and the ecosystem, and the application of public policies by sectoral governments is necessary to guarantee the care and quality of this environment as a world heritage site A bibliographic documentary study was carried out, with the objective of carrying out a review of the pollution of the rivers, the legal framework and establishing some factors that affect the pollution of the Guayas River and its tributaries. Bibliographic citations are made of the most outstanding theoretical references, according to the guidelines of the research. The authors conclude that the factors that affect the pollution of the Guayas river and its tributaries are the constant discharges of wastewater, industrial waste, toxic waste, soil pollution, floating solids, among others, also, it is recommended to control and carry out an adequate treatment to the discharges of wastewater, industrial waste, toxic waste, soil pollution, which directly affect the pollution of the Guayas
