A number of competent philosophers have put forth the view that the inotacthical problem of the justification of morality is merely a pseudo-problem. To "justify morality," on the standard treatment, is to provide an answer to the question, "Why should 1 he moral?" or to some other question very like it; but, it is claimed, this is an illegitimate, meaningless or circular question: it is impossible in principle to answer it and (hence) also unnecessary! "There can he no answer to an illegitimate question, save that the question is illegitimate."
