This paper seeks to revisit the Caribbean Developmental State framework that was proposed by the author in earlier studies It is recognised that the Caribbean state is now required to adapt its role and purpose to both the contemporary realities and historical factors, as national governments try to respond to the challenges of the new millennium. These challenges require Caribbean governments to construct new policy platforms on which to work. This retooling of government policy-making requires a re-thinking of the form of state intervention and, especially, an emphasis on its “modern” developmental role. The first section of the paper summarises and evaluates past development efforts in Jamaica and The Bahamas. The second part seeks to chart a Developmental State framework for Jamaica and The Bahamas. The final main section of the paper identifies key strategic requirements and offers alternative policy suggestions, while considering socio-cultural and historical factors. En este articulo se explora nuevamente el contexto propuesto por el autor en estudios anteriores bajo la denominacion generica Estado de Desarrollo Caribeno. Se reconoce que el estado caribeno debe adaptar sus funciones y sus objetivos a las realidades contemporaneas y a factores historicos asi como los gobiernos nacionales intentan responder a los desafios del nuevo milenio. Estos desafios exigen a los gobiernos caribenos a construir nuevas plataformas politicas. Esto, a su vez, requiere una reflexion sobre las formas que adopta la intervencion del estado y, especialmente, un enfasis mayor en su papel de motor del desarrollo. En la primera seccion se resumen y evaluan los esfuerzos desarrollistas que han tenido lugar en Jamaicas y Las Bahamas. En la segunda seccion se detalla el contexto de un Estado de Desarrollo para estos dos paises. En la seccion final se identifican los requerimientos claves y se ofrecen sugerencias de politicas alternativas desde una perspectiva socio-cultural e historica.
