In the summer of 1875, having learned about the upscaling of the revolt initiated by the people of the Ferghana valley against the government, K. P. Von Kaufmann, Governor General of Turkestan, moved towards Khokand with his platoon. The platoon also included the manuscript collector and orientalist A. L. Kun in order that he gather scientific data about the Khokand Khanate. Kun visited Tashkent, Khujand, Mayram, Bim-Aryk village, Khokand, Alty-aryk village, Margilan, Sharihan, Assan, Andijan and Namangan during his trip and collected as much valuable material about the Khokand Khanate as the war conditions permitted, having the chance to witness the events during the last period of the khanate. After the trip he provided important –albeit cursory– information about the geographic, ethnic and administrative-military structure, economic situation as well as the tax system of the Khokand Khanate in his notes published in the journal of the Russian Geographic Society; and he managed to construct a compact panorama of the aforementioned period.
