In Islamic thought, many works have been done regarding the classification of the sciences. These works may have different manners and wording styles. One of these is the type of works called anmudhaj which we may also describe as samples or examples. The Anmudhaj type of works are subject-centered and an example of the early period Anmudhaj is the Persian work called Hada'iq al-anwar fi haqa'iq al-asrar or with its well-known name, Jami' al-'Ulum, by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī. In this work, the author examined sixty different sciences in total divided as naqli and aqli. In this article, we will examine the science of Tafsīr which is the 8th science of the work. Rāzī examined the science of Tafsīr in three different parts as explicit issues, implicit issues, and imtihān. He examined three issues in each part and nine issues in total. Under the title of the explicit issues, he examined basmala, al-huroof al-muqatta’ah and the corresponding of ʾalif to hamzah. Under the title of the implicit issues, he examined the 63rd Āyah of Ṭāʾ Hāʾ which carried some sort of problems according to him, the 190th Āyah of al-ʾAʿrāf and some problems regarding the 37th Āyah of al-ʾAḥzāb and answers to them. Finally, in the imtihān chapter, he gave three Āyah-centered questions and answered them.
