This article discusses a mode of reading that touches the depths of human experience -loss, love, pain-, and underpins its reconstruction in times of crisis: reading "self-help". From the results of our doctoral research, we observe the fact that products such as mass-produced literary texts are constructed, selected, purchased and owned by real readers with needs, desires, intentions and interpretive strategies. Considering reading as invention of meaning -registered in the restrictions and limitations imposed by the text- and as social practice -embedded in a lattice of differents positions and relationships- under specific spatio-temporal circumstances, we recover "representations" and "reading modes" and propose a "tentative typology of readers" for the case study, foreseeing the possibility that these conceptualizations can be considered in the development of a reading paradigm massive genres.
