The genus Artemia Linnaeus, 1758 comprises a number of sexual species and several parthenogenetic populations. In the New World, only two sexual species are present: Artemia franciscana (Kellogg, 1906) and Artemia persimilis (Piccinelli and Prosdocimi, 1968). In the Old World, where both sexual and parthenogenetic populations occur, five sexual species have been described: Artemia salina (Leach, 1819), Artemia urmiana (Gunther, 1890), Artemia sinica (Cai, 1989), Artemia sp. (Pilla and Beardmore, 1994) and Artemia tibetiana (Abatzopoulos et al., 1998).
