FPA believes the UK’s approach to FGM is best informed by the World Health Organisation’s definition of female genital mutilation (FGM), which states that any form of cutting or surgery to the genitalia that is done for cultural or non-medical reasons should be classed as FGM. FPA believes that female genital mutilation is a violation of the human rights of girls and women and constitutes a form of abuse, denying girls and women the right to physical and sexual health and wellbeing. The key to tackling FGM is empowering girls and women in at-risk communities, as well as improving the available support for women and girls who have undergone FGM.
