The article pretends to reflect the functional relationship between democracy and development by describing its conceptual evolution, moving from its instrumental conception to an expanded one, so that the main variables of its operationalization are deductively extracted. Based on the above, an analytical discussion is carried out from different theories that sustain the positive and negative effects of democracy in development.
