Sometime in the pre-dawn hours of July 16, 1979, an earthen dam holding back wastes produced by United Nuclear Corporation9s uranium mill parted in Church Rock, New Mexico. From the widening breach poured ninety four million gallons of highly contaminated effluent and 1,100 tons of wet slurry sands.
