Garrelt Hardin is one of the most imponant authors in environmental literature. Following consequentialıst ethics, he accepted earrying capacity concept as an ethical ctiterion in order to evaluate whether an action is good or not. The carrying capacity of a panicular area is defined as the maximum number of a species that can be supported indefinitely by a panicular habitat, without degradation of the environment and without diminishing carrying capacity in the future. According to thıs crıterion, if an action causes harın 10 the environment, where thıs action will be done, over the carrying capacity, it is not ethıcal and vice versa. Using this ethical criterion, Hardin emphisized that developing countries must avoid from causing harm to the environment which they live by inercasing their population. He opposed to the immigration of excess population ıo United States of America from developing countries because, as he argued. this wıll bring about eececding the carrying capacity of this country.
