Eduardo Mendoza, who is one of the most important Catalan authors of contemporary Spanish literature, examines the political, historical and economical development of Barcelona in his novel called "City of Miracles". This novel can be regarded as the novel of a metropolis in which the author investigates the efforts paid by the citizens to gain their social identity. The author tries to introduce this to the reader in an objective speech manner.
