This research has studied 1287 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of oral cavity, comprising the period of 1979 to 1999, collected in the findings of the anatomopathological exams taken in the laboratories of the state of Sergipe. From the researched universe the frequency of 801 cases (62,2%) was found for males and 412 cases (32,0%) for females, in a ratio of 1,9:1 for males. The prevailing age was from 60 to 70, an average age of 58,2 years old for males and 60,5 years for females. The tongue was the most frequent anatomical location for males with 252 cases (31,5%) followed by the lip with 206 cases (25,7%) and by the floor of the mouth with 115 cases (14,4%); whereas for females it was found the tongue with 120 cases (29,1%), the lip with 79 cases (19,2%) and the palate with 67 cases (16,3%). For malignity histological graduation the category well differentiated was the prevailing with 861 cases (66,8%), followed by the moderately differentiated with 258 cases (20,0%) and the poorly differentiated with 99 cases (7,7%). Carcinoma “in situ” occurred in just 4 cases (0,3%). The results of this study demonstrated that the epidemiological profile of the epidermoyd carcinoma of oral cavity, displays greater occurrence in male subjects, over the fifth life decade, with anatomical location in the tongue, followed by the lip and the floor of the mouth and well differentiated as for the malignity histological graduation.
